Cooking brown rice: everything you need to know before you start

The brown rice is a brown rice which is much richer in nutrients than white rice. Indeed, not having been refined, this rice is said to be complete, because it has retained its envelope, which explains its color.

In fact, it contains much more fiber , vitamins(especially B9) and minerals (especially magnesium, phosphorus and potassium), as well as complex carbohydrates. It is these carbohydrates that will make this rice a particularly nutritious food that will quickly bring you to satiety.

Be careful, however, to favor brown rice from organic farming, because the residues of pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical treatments used for conventional crops are mainly concentrated in the outer shell of the grain.

How to successfully cook classic brown rice?

There are many methods of cooking brown rice just like white rice. For example, you can prepare it Creole, in a pilaf version , steamed for gentle cooking, or even as a risotto..

Remember that brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice: this must be taken into account to obtain optimum results! Note that it is recommended to rinse it before cooking, which will have the effect of extracting the starch and any impurities.

You just need to run it several times underwater until the water remains clear. You can even let brown rice soak in cold water for about 2 hours before cooking to save 10 minutes of cooking time. The rice will be more digestible and healthier.

    For Creole cooking

Immerse the rice in salted boiling water, and let it cook for about 45 minutes over medium heat.

    For the pilaf version

Heat a saucepan or a large pan, and add oil and the rice grains which will absorb the fat (at this stage, you can add spices, chopped onion, bay leaf, etc. ). Cook until the rice becomes almost translucent, and add water (two volumes of water to one of rice). Bring to a boil, and cook over low heat, covered, until the water has evaporated.

    For Steaming

Steaming is carried out with a steamer in which you will place a little water, possibly flavored with a broth or the herbs of your choice. The rice, placed in the basket, will cook slowly, covered. You will get more sticky rice than in the pan if you add twice as much water as rice, or firmer rice with the same amount of water as rice.

    For a risotto cooking

Brown a round brown rice in a little oil, then add the other ingredients of your recipe. Cook over low heat for about twenty minutes, gradually incorporating the cooking liquid (as soon as the rice has absorbed some of it, add more, and so on). Stir regularly to promote agglomeration.

How to successfully cook brown rice with Cookeo, Thermomix…?

The cooking rice can also be done at Cookeo or Thermomix, it’s really very simple! With the Thermomix, put half a teaspoon of salt in the bowl of your appliance, then pour the desired quantity of rice into the cooking basket (make sure you have rinsed it properly beforehand).

Place the basket in the bowl, and fill it until the water is flush with the rice; then remove a little bit so that the water remains just below the basket. All you have to do is program 20 minutes of cooking at 100 ° C on speed 1 (allow 5 additional minutes if you are cooking more than 300 g of rice).

If you are using the Cookeo, put the rice in the steamer basket and in the bowl of the appliance, then cover it with water. Select the “rapid / pressure cooking” mode, and allow 9 minutes of cooking with the brown rice. In a general way,

How to successfully cook brown rice in the microwave?

Cooking rice in the microwave is not really a conventional method, but it is still possible for those in a hurry! For this, plan 4 cups of water for a dose of brown rice (about 60 g), and put everything in a microwave-safe dish.

Cover the dish, and cook the rice for 35 minutes at maximum power. The ideal, for a more homogeneous cooking, is to stir the mixture every 10 minutes and leave it in the water after cooking is finished while waiting to serve it.
